THE TRIP

Upon your arrival at Jupiter Pointe Marina you will find the Shark Addicts dock at the north end of the facility with parking available in the gravel lot just west of the dock itself near the boat sales grounds. As our distinguished guest, you are welcome to stay after your charter is complete and enjoy the many amenities the Jupiter Pointe facility has to offer. Enjoy a fresh water rinse and head to our ocean side restaurant, pool, paddleboard rental, or premier boat club. Once we are ready to embark on our journey, we will head out on the Shark Addicts 36ft custom TwinVee for a 3-hour tour of epic proportions! Your vessel comes fully loaded with HD surround sound speakers, cold beverages for all of our guests, dry storage for their belongings, and a commercial dive ladder for easy access in and out of the water. When we arrive at our research location in the deep blue sea, our team of researchers and devoted crew will provide you with all the details you need to become part of our community-science research team! (No prior experience or certifications are necessary. For safety GoPros and other small action cameras are prohibited)

THE RESEARCH

The research being conducted aims to record the diversity, abundance, and distribution of sharks over time and space using a modified Underwater Visual Census (UVC) method. We record data on the environmental conditions like water temperature and current speed, and once in the water, we will be using a camera with paired lasers to capture images of each shark. The lasers are a known distance apart and will show up on the image as two green dots so when the image is analyzed, ASC scientists can get an accurate total length measurement of the sharks, which also helps to determine their age. You will spend the day with members of the ASC research team, helping collect and log data points, and capturing images of the sharks themselves.

  • No certifications or experience necessary

  • Charters leave from Jupiter, Florida

THE REASONS & RESULTS

Some regional shark populations have decreased by 90-99% and almost all are under threat from overfishing, habitat loss, pollution, and a changing climate. Sharks suffer from an unwarranted negative public image which has delayed research and protections. All 500+ species of sharks play a role in the marine ecosystems and without them, the health of our ocean is in jeopardy.

The captured images and the results from this study can determine any shifts in shark species or abundance over time, what may be causing these changes and therefore, how to mitigate negative impacts. So far, this information has been presented at professional scientific meetings and provided to federal fisheries managers to help designate the local area as a Habitat Area of Particular Concern (HAPC) for lemon sharks. This study has also initiated novel research on shark behavior, genetics, parasites, and disease.

This baseline survey of the diversity, abundance and distribution of coastal shark communities using non-invasive techniques is imperative to provide the information necessary to protect them.

THE TEAM

The American Shark Conservancy (ASC) is a U.S. registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that actively addresses threats to vulnerable shark species through comprehensive, innovative, and inclusive research and outreach. ASC motivates the public to speak up for shark conservation by supporting science literacy and environmental advocacy through education and involvement in research.

Fin Alliance is an organization that is bringing the community together for ocean conservation. Through education, adventure, and inclusion our goal is to create a unified wave of ocean allies.

Proceeds from this dive go to shark research and education.
